Tor Browser setup for WeTheNorth
Fifteen minutes, zero cost, and afterwards you can reach the WeTheNorth Market — and every other onion site — privately. Here is the whole procedure.
Step 1 — Download Tor Browser from the only right place
Go to torproject.org. Windows, macOS, Linux and Android builds are all there. Do not download Tor from anywhere else — a tampered browser is the one piece of this chain you cannot inspect afterwards.
Step 2 — Install and connect
- Run the installer with default options.
- Open Tor Browser and press Connect on the launch screen.
- Wait for the circuit to build — up to half a minute the first time. The screen will say "Connected to the Tor network".
Step 3 — Open the WeTheNorth onion link
Copy this into the Tor Browser address bar:
http://hn2paw7zaahbikbejiv6h22zwtijlam65y2c77xj2ypbilm2xs4bnbid.onionThe first load takes 10–30 seconds while circuits settle — normal. When the market page appears, bookmark it. From now on you enter WeTheNorth through that bookmark, not through links from search engines, Reddit or Telegram.
Step 4 — Set the security level
Click the shield icon in Tor Browser's toolbar and set the security level to Safest. This disables JavaScript on onion sites you visit — a small comfort upgrade for reading market pages, and a big reduction in attack surface.
Step 5 — Register on the market properly
- Username: not your real name, not used anywhere else.
- Passphrase: long, unique, stored in a password manager or on paper.
- Then immediately: 2FA on, PGP key added, recovery mnemonic saved offline.
Then deposit a small BTC/XMR test, pick a top-feedback vendor, and place your first order. The full walkthrough (wallet, escrow, disputes) lives in our companion guides at wethenorthmarketplace.com.
Everyday Tor habits for market users
- Page won't load? Tor menu → "New Tor circuit for this site" before assuming the market is down.
- Keep Tor updated — it auto-notifies; let it update, since updates fix relay bugs you cannot see.
- One identity per thing. Do not log into your personal email inside Tor Browser sessions you use for the market. Compartmentalization is free privacy.
- Browsing casually? The clearnet mirrors (wtnmarket.store, wtnmarket.net, wtnmarket.ru) are fine for window-shopping — see our onion links page for when to prefer which.
